 Waite Charles Hoyt was a Major League Baseball pitcher who was born on September 9, 1899 in Brooklyn, New York He finished high school at Erasmus Hall High School and signed with the New York Giants at fifteen years of age. Nicknamed “The Schoolboy Wonder”, reviews say he did not have a successful career with the Giants. Giants’ manager, John McGraw, transferred him to the Boston Red Sox. With the Red Sox, he was said to perform very well and this caught the attention of the New York Yankees who signed him in the 1920 season.

 

As a Yankee, he immediately rose to fame with his 19 games won and three complete games pitches. He appeared and won in six American League championships and had his greatest seasons as a Yankee in 1927 and 1928. He recorded 22 wins and 2.64 ERA and 3.36 Era in another year. He finished his stint with the Yankees in 1930.

 

He also played for the Detroit Tigers, the Philadelphia Athletics, the Brooklyn Dodgers, the New York Giants and the Pittsburgh Pirates.

 

Hoyt posted a record of 237-182 for his entire playing career and was named to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1969.

 

After his playing career, he went into broadcasting for the WMCA. He served as a color commentator for a number of games in the Major League Baseball.
