Venus Williams was born on June 17, 1980 in Lynwood, California. She has won 13 Grand Slam titles which include 5 singles, 6 women’s doubles, and 2 mixed doubles championships.
Venus is the older sister of fellow World No. 1 tennis player Serena Williams. She turned as professional player on October 31, 1994. She lost her first professional tournament against top seed Arantxa Sanchez Vicario in 1994 – the only tournament she played throughout the year. In 1997 she started to play regularly on the tour. Teaming up with Justin Gimelstob in 1998, Williams had her first mixed doubles titles at the Australian and French Opens. It was a “Williams Family Mixed Doubles Grand Slam” when her sister Serena won the other two Grand Slam mixed doubles titles in that year. Venus also stood out in the singles as she won the Grand Slam Cup as well as the tournaments in Miami and Oklahoma City. She finished 1998 ranking number five in the world.
She and Serena made history as the first sister team to win a Grand Slam doubles titles when they teamed up for the French and US Opens. She had her singles Wimbledon title in 2000 and also bagged two gold medals at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. She was TENNIS Magazine’s 25th of the 40 Greatest Players of the tennis era.
