Popularly known as "Doggie," "Big Dog" and "Big Doggie," Atanasio Pérez Rigal is a former player for the Major League Baseball who was born in May 14, 1942. Perez established himself as key part of the Red Big Machine for Cincinnati.
Perez played for the Montreal Expos from 1977 to 1979 and the Philadelphia Phillies in 1983. He retired with a batting average of .279 to his name and 379 homeruns. He scored in 1272 runs and batted in 1652 runs. He got elected in 2000 to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Currently, Perez is the assistant to the Marlins general manager.
Back in 1964, Perez was tagged as the Pacific Coast League's Most Valuable Player while playing for San Diego Padres. In 1967, he made it to the first All-Star team where he subsequently bagged the Most Valuable Player title. The year 1970 for Perez is the finest year in his career statistics wise where he scored 107 runs and 40 homeruns.
Perez holds a seven-time All Star to his name. He got elected in 2000 to the Baseball Hall of Fame after garnering 77.15 percent of the votes, or 385 out of 499 ballots. He is also distinguished as the first player for Montreal Expos ever elected to the Hall of Fame.
