About Tommy John Memorabilia & Collectibles
Born on May 22, 1943 in Terre Haute, Indiana is former Major League Baseball player
Tommy John. He used to play as a left-handed pitcher.
John ranks number five in the major league history among left-handers with the most number of total career victories – he has 288. Before being recognized as a top baseball player, he first stood out as a basketball player in Grestmeyer High School. John kicked off in the major league in 1963 when he signed with the Cleveland Indians. His 26-year major league career had its peak in 1970s when he played for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He has been part of the All-Star game in years 1968, 1978, 1979, and 1980. John was also able to participate in Dodgers’ World Series against the New York Yankees in three years.
He had a high 1974 season having a 13-3 record. Add to that, the Dodgers were on their way to their first National League title. A pennant they’ve been waiting for eight years. However, following that fruitful season was a permanent damage in John’s ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching arm. This led to a breakthrough surgical operation named after him, the Tommy John surgery. Here, the ligament in the elbow of his pitching arm was supplanted with a tendon taken from his right forearm. It was considered a miraculous event as he was able pitch again after the surgery.
