Known for his selfless acts in and out of the baseball field, Timothy Stephen Wakefield has been a long time Boston Red Sox pitcher. He was born in Melbourne, Florida on August 2, 1966. His most well-known pitch is his knuckleball.
Even as a student in Florida Tech, he has already shown great potential. Because of that he was named as the Panthers’ team MVP and has set single season records. He developed his famous knuckleball when a scout told him that he would never make the big leagues with his skills. He made his professional debut by playing for the Salem Buccaneers in Single- A level. He was promoted to Double- A in 1991 and led the Pittsburgh Pirates in all minor leagues with his continuous improvement.
He played against the St. Louis Cardinals in his major league debut. From 1992- 1994 he won several awards like the National League Rookie Pitcher of the Year by The Sporting News and the National League Championship Series MVP award. In 1995, Wakefield was traded to the Boston Red Sox and became the team’s most reliable starter. He was a big help to the Red Sox in winning the American League East Division title. He also won the American League Comeback Player of the Year from the Sporting News.
In 1999 he was installed as a closer by their manager Jimy Williams because the original closer, Tom Gordon, was injured. By July 2002, he was returned to the rotation and in 2003, he was one of the most successful pitchers against the New York Yankees. He currently is still one of the most consistent men in the Red Sox team.
