A left winger in ice hockey and alternate captain of the National Hockey League’s Buffalo Sabres, Thomas Vanek was from Baden bei Wien, Australia. Drafted to the NHL in 2003, he is considered the highest draft pick in the history of Austria. He played junior hockey during his high school years in Sioux Falls Stampede. He enlisted himself with the Golden Gophers with the University Of Minnesota and won the team the 2003 NCAA National Championships.

 

On the 3rd of September 2004, he signed a three year contract with the Buffalo Sabres and started playing in the 2005-06 season. He showed a promising hockey rookie career. He also signed a seven year contract with the Edmonton Oilers after his contract with the Sabres expired but the Sabres matched what the Oilers offered Vanek and remained under the Sabres till the 2013-14 season ends.
