Popular as “The Hitman”, Thomas Hearns is a retired professional boxer. He was born in Memphis, Tennessee but was raised in Detroit, Michigan after his family decided to relocate when he was young. As an amateur boxer, Hearns had an excellent record of 155 wins to 8 losses. He was able to win the Light Welterweight Championship title of the Amateur Athletic Union. He was also awarded the National Golden Gloves Light Welterweight Championship title in 1977.

Under the guidance of Emanuel Steward, Hearns began his professional boxing career in 1977. After fighting a total of 67 fights during his entire career, Hearns was able to record 61 wins including 48 wins via technical knock-out. He endured five losses and one draw for his entire run as a professional boxer.

His first win was against Pipino Cuevas for the World Boxing Association (WBA) Welterweight Champion title in 1980. In 1982, he was able to beat Wilfred Benitez for the World Boxing Council Light Middleweight Champion title which he held from December 1982 until in 1986. He moved up that ladder to snatch the WBC Light Heavyweight Champion title from Dennis Andries in 1987.
