A right-handed relief pitcher, Ted Wade Abernathy played for the Major League Baseball from 1955 to 1972. Born in North Carolina, Ted Abernathy had indulged himself playing for eight MLB teams all throughout his career.
At a young age of 22, Abernathy signed up for the big league as a member of the Washington Senators wherein he played from 1955 to 1957 and in 1960. In 1966, Abernathy already had played for the Milwaukee Braves, Cleveland Indians, and Chicago Cubs. The Cubs released Abernathy in exchange for
Lee Thomas, the outfielder for the Boston Red Sox that time, making him an official member of the Atlanta Braves. The Cincinnati Reds, Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals, and Kansas City Royals were the teams he participated in.
A shoulder surgery led him hanging by the thread; thus pushing him to alter his pitching strategy and acing the submarine pitch. With his 14 seasons with eight different teams, he appeared in 681 games and had 148 saves. Abernathy is a two-time TSN Reliever of the Year award, a title he received in 1965 and 1967.
Roy Face, Montreal Expos Pitcher, also had this TSN award. On September 30, 1972, Abernathy enjoyed his last game with the Royals and also waved goodbye to the team’s manager,
Bob Lemon.

He played for the Senators from 1955 - 1960, Indians from 1963 - 1964, Cubs from 1965 - 1970, Braves in 1966, Reds from 1967 - 1968, Cardinals in 1970 and Royals from 1970 - 1972. Over 14 seasons, he started 34 games, won 63 games, struck out 765 batters, and had a 3.46 ERA. Born on March 6, 1933 in Stanley, NC, Abernathy stood 6' 4" and weighed 215 lb. He attended Stanley (Stanley, NC) high school. His debut was on April 13, 1955 and he played his final game on September 30, 1972. Over his career, Abernathy made $84,500.
