At 20 years old, Carlton made a debut with the Cardinals on 1965, and was made regular on 1967. The 6'4"/1.93 m Carlton became a dangerous player with his hard fastball and slide. Striking out 19 New York Mets on September 15, 1969, he set a record in a nine inning game for strikeouts. With a conflict in his salary, the Cardinals traded him to the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for
