Spud Davis (full name: Virgil Lawrence Davis; no nicknames) played catcher from 1932 until 1945 for the Philadelphia Phillies, St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates. He played for the Phillies from 1932 - 1939, Cardinals from 1934 - 1936, Reds from 1937 - 1938 and Pirates from 1940 - 1945. Over 16 seasons, he played 1458 games, hit 77 home runs, drove in 388 runs, and stole 6 bases. Born on December 20, 1904 in Birmingham, AL, Davis stood 6' 1" and weighed 197 lb. He attended Gulf Coast Military Academy (Gulfport, MS) (All Transactions) high school. His debut was on April 30, 1928 and he played his final game on September 5, 1945.
