American former professional player in the Major League Baseball Sparky Lyle was born on July 22, 1944 in DuBois, Pennsylvania.
The left-handed relief pitcher first signed a contract with the Baltimore Orioles on June 17, 1964 as an amateur free agent. However, he was not able to participate in any games for the Orioles. From the Orioles, he was acquired by the Boston Red Sox on that same year. Lyle, who has the Sparky Lyle “#28” autographed baseball as a cool collectible for his fans, joined his new team on July 4, 1967 in a time where the team was known to have an “Impossible Dream” season. He became the Sox’s leading reliever during the 1969 season which makes the Sparky Lyle “#28” autographed baseball a cool sport item to collect. Through a trade-off on March 22, 1972, he was assumed by the New York Yankees for Dany Cater. With the Yankees, Lyle became a silent ace by becoming one of the best relief pitchers.
He was one big key to Yankees’ three straight World Series titles. In 1972, he was able to an American League record by being able to save 35 games. Lyle continued to lead the league in saves during the late ‘70s, after which he became the first American League reliever to be rewarded with a Cy Young Award. From the New York Yankees, Lyle was traded to the Texas Rangers, then to the Philadelphia Phillies and was purchased by the Chicago White Sox in 1982. After 16 years in baseball, Lyle retired with a record of 238 saves and 2.88 ERA.
