About Satchel Paige Memorabilia & Collectibles
A right-hand pitcher for the Major League Baseball under the Cleveland Indians, Satchel Paige is the first among the black players to be selected from the Negro Leagues. His professional baseball career started in 1926 under the Chattanooga White Sox. There are many versions on how Paige got his name. During his growing up years he was a troubled child that he even got arrested on his 12th birthday for shoplifting. He has to go into reform school because of his delinquency. There he met Edward Byrd who helped developed his pitching ability. He was released six months earlier than expected. He then joined his brother in pitching for the Mobile Tigers.
He debuted in pitching career under the Cleveland Indians at the age of 42 making him the oldest player to ever appear in major leagues. He replaced
Bob Lemon at a game against the St. Louis Brown as starting pitcher when Boudreau saw that they are already losing. After his contract with the Indians, he signed up in the Negro American League under
Philadelphia Stars.
