According to records Sandy was a boy from Brooklyn which is in New York and was raised in a Jewish family. Sandy studied at the Lafayette High School and surprisingly won fame for basketball rather than baseball.  According to sources while Sandy was in school he was playing for the Jewish Community Center which was a local organization and once his high school had a strong ingrown basketball team, Sandy joined them and played his way through school for them as a captain of the team.
