Roy Stanley Emerson is a former Australian professional lawn tennis player. He holds 12 Grand Slam singles titles and 16 Grand Slam men’s doubles titles. Emerson is the only male player holder of singles and doubles titles from all four Grand Slam tournaments.
Roy won his first Grand Slam doubles title in 1959 with partner Neale Fraser at Wimbledon. His first Grand Slam singles victory was in 1961, at the Australian Championships, where he won over
Rod Lavor in four sets in the final. In the same year, he once again defeated Lavor in the U.S. Championships. Throughout his career, Emerson has defeated amateur and professional players such as
Fred Stolle in the 1964 Wimbledon singles and
Roscoe Tanner at the Pacific Coast Championships in San Francisco in 1973. Roy Emerson eventually retires, playing just a few tournaments in 1977. He last appeared in the Gstaad, Switzerland tournament in 1983.
