Born on February 25, 1940 in Seattle, Washington, Ron Santo is a former third baseman in Major League Baseball. Almost his entire career was played with the Chicago Cubs in Major League Baseball. His real name is Ronald Edward Santo.
Santo was named a National League All-Star nine times in his 15 seasons of playing in the league. He was also able to win five successive Gold Glove awards for fielding excellence in 1964 to 1968. He had his debut on June 26, 1960 with the Chicago Cubs. Santo was then able to play with the Cubs until 1973 and had finished his career with the Chicago White Sox in the year 1974. In his 14 seasons with the Cubs, he was able to hit 337 home runs and he also became the third baseman to hit over 300 home runs and successfully win five Gold Gloves.
It was in 2002 when Santo was hailed as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s “Person of the Year.” He then retired on September 28, 2003. He battled against diabetes and it became the subject of a documentary, The Old Cub in the year 2004. The film was then written, co-produced, and directed by Jeff, Santo’s son.
