More popular with his nickname of “Louisiana Lightning”, Ron Guidry is a retired professional baseball pitcher. He was active from 1975 all the way to 1988. After his retirement, he served as the New York Yankees’ pitching coach in 2006 and in 2007. He started his MLB career in 1975 and was converted into a relief pitcher in 1977. However, he earned a starting position towards the middle of the season. Guidry was a helpful member of the Yankees’ team that captured the 1977 and the 1978 World Series titles.
Guidry was able to post an earned run average of 1.74 during the 1978 season and was the front leader of the league. The success of Guidry’s pitching is largely due to his slider. Guidry was named into four All-Star selections including in 1978-79 and in 1982-83. He was also awarded the highly-coveted Gold Glove Award for five consecutive years, in 1982 all the way to 1986.
In 1978, Guidry was able to receive a number of awards including the AL Cy Young Award and the AL TSN Pitcher of the Year Award. He received the distinguished Roberto Clemente Award in 1984. Guidry was named as the team captain for the New York Yankees from 1986 down to 1988. The Yankees’ have long retired his #49 jersey number.
