Roman Gabriel is a former professional football player. He is popular for being the first Asian-American to appear in the NFL as a starting quarterback. He played football in New Hanover High School. Gabriel became active from 1962 to 1977.
Gabriel entered North Carolina State University where he played collegiate football. He was named captain of the team and was able to set a total of 22 school records. He was an academic All-American and was named into the Atlantic Coast Conference’s 50th Anniversary Football Team. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1989.
During the 1962 AFL Draft, he was the first pick by the Oakland Raiders and was the second pick in the 1962 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams. He decided to sign with the Rams and wore the number 18. He played for Rams until 1972 and signed with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1973.
Gabriel was named to the Pro Bowl in 1967, 1968 and 1969 as a Ram and then in 1973 as an Eagle. He was also named the AP NFL Most Valuable Player in 1969 as well as the UPI NFL Player of the Year in the same season. He won the 1969 Bert Bell award, the 1969 Offensive Player of the Year Award and 1973 Comeback Player of the Year.
