Roman Hamrlik is a National Hockey League player who is nicknamed as “The Hammer”. Drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning as a first overall pick, he plays a defenceman and is mainly part of the team’s offense. Because of his superb offensive skills, he was given the role of a powerplay quarterback.
On August 12, 2005, he made a free agent deal with the Calgary Flames. He signed another deal with the Montreal Canadiens on July 2, 2007. He also played for the New York Islanders and the Edmonton Oilers. Likewise, he was Czech Republic’s representative during the 1998 Winter Olympics. Together with his team, he won the gold medal in the said Olympics.
In 2009, Hamrlik was involved in a crime organization issue which was caused by his alleged link with a certain Pasquale Mangiola. He and two of his teammates were charged of drug offense and firearms offense. However, Mangiola later on said that the three athletes were not part of the accused crime and therefore no investigation against them will be done.
Hamrlik played in three National Hockey League All-Star Games in 1996, 1999 and 2003. In his NHL career as of 2009, he made 590 points and 442 assists.
