He then decided to sign with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays being a free agent.
It was in 2001 when he was traded to the Kansas City Royals where his performance declined. As a free agent, Hernandez signed with the Atlanta Braves in the year 2003, with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2004, and with the New York Mets in the year 2005.
