Rick DiPietro is currently playing for the New York Islanders. He was born on September 19, 1981in Winthrop, Mass, USA.
He had played one season with Boston University where he was named to the All-Rookie Team, named Second Team All-Hockey East, hailed as the team’s Co-Most Valuable Player, and was also hailed as the Hockey East’s Rookie of the Year. It was in 2000 when DiPietro was drafted by the Isles and was the first overall pick of the team. He was the second goaltender to be chosen with the number one overall pick in the National Hockey League Entry Draft. DiPietro was also the fourth American to have such top draft position. In February 2006, he was named to the US Olympic hockey team during the 2006 Toronto Winter Olympics together with Jason Blake and Mark Parrish.
It was on September 12, 2006 when DiPietro signed a15-year contract with the Islanders and is the longest official NHL contract to be signed. He unfortunately suffered a concussion just after he was hit in the head with the knee of Steve Begin when he was about to race out to poke check a puck at the blueline during the first period.
