Richard Smehlik (full name: Richard Smehlik; no nicknames) played defenseman from 1993 until 2003 for the Buffalo Sabres, Atlanta Thrashers and New Jersey Devils. He played for the Sabres from 1993 - 2002, Thrashers in 2003 and Devils in 2003. Over 10 seasons, he played 644 games, scored 49 goals, and made 146 assists. Born in Ostrava, Czechoslovakia on January 23, 1970, Smehlik stands 6-4 and weighs 222 lbs. He was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in the 5th round (97th overall) of the 1990 NHL Entry Draft. Smehlik officially announced retirement on September 17, 2003.
