Phil Ford is a former professional basketball player. He became played in the National Basketball Association from 1978-1985. Before he went on to play professionally, he played college basketball for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill varsity team. During his second year in college, he was picked to play for the U.S. Basketball Team during the 1976 Olympics and help take the gold. During his senior year, Ford posted a 20.8 average points per game. By the end of his college basketball career, Ford was named as the 1978 College Player of the Year by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association and picked as an All-American from 1976-1978. He also earned the Eastman, USBWA College Player of the Year and the John R. Wooden Awards.
During the 1978 NBA Draft, he was picked by the Kansas City Kings. Ford was second overall pick. By the end of his first season in the NBA, he was named the NBA Rookie of the Year. By the end of his career, he posted an average of 11.6 points and 3.083 assists per game. Ford retired in 1985.
