Paul Hornung, born Paul Vernon Hornung, is a retired professional football player who hails from Louisville, Kentucky. He was Bishop Benedict Joseph Flaget High School’ superb football varsity athlete and was also a basketball and baseball star in that school. He played as a quarterback, placekicker and a halfback in college as part of the University of Notre Dame. Nicknamed “Golden Boy”, he also played as a safety in that university and was awarded the Heisman Trophy in 1956. He played in the 1957 College All-Star game where he had a 100 yard race with Abe Woodson.
He began playing professional football in 1957 as a first selection overall of the Green Bay Packers. He played for the Packers until 1962 and returned to the team in 1964. He is a two-time Pro Bowl selection and was named to the NFL 1960s All Decade Team. He was also named as the Most Valuable Player in the National Football League in 1961 and in that year received the Bert Bell Award. Hornung was also inducted to the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame. He ended his NFL career with 3, 711 yards rushed and 130 receptions. He had 1,480 receiving yards which averaged to 11.4 yards per reception.
