Patrick Jacques Roy formerly played professional ice hockey as a goaltender. He is from Sainte- Foy, Quebec, Canada and is nicknamed “Saint Patrick”. He spent his early ice hockey playing days with the Sainte- Foy Gouverneurs.
Roy was selected by the Montreal Canadiens in the 3rd round of the 1984 National Hockey League Entry Draft as 51st overall. He spent some time playing for the Granby Bisons before he made his 1st NHL appearance in a game against the Winnipeg Jets. He then became the starting goalie for Montreal and led them to win the Stanley Cup and he was in turn awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy. His team was able to go for another Stanley Cup berth the next season but lost it to the Calgary Flames. In 1993, he played against the Quebec Nordiques, Buffalo Sabres, and the New York Islanders and was able to clinch another Stanley Cup against the Los Angeles Kings. After a few more seasons with Montreal, he was traded off to the Colorado Avalanche and led the team to their 1st Stanley Cup. He was a big part in the rivalry of the Avalanche and the Detroit Red Wings and played against the Minnesota Wild for his final NHL game. Upon retirement, Roy worked as vice president, owner, general manager, and head coach of the Quebec Remparts. Overall, Roy played in 1,029 regular season games with 551 wins and 315 losses and was inducted to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006.
