While he turns professional in 1991, it was his 1997 U.S. Open victory that propels him to the forefront and helped make him a household name. Prior to 1997, this was Rafter’s only Association of Tennis Professionals singles title he had won. Rafter's step forward came in 1997, beginning at the French Open, where he reached the semifinals, falling in four sets to Sergi Bruguera. Later in the year, Rafter surprised many by emerging victorious at the US Open, defeating Greg Rusedski, Andre Agassi, and Michael Chang among others in earlier rounds. Rafter retired in later part of 2002. Rafter recently played some competitive doubles matches, but has no plans to return from retirement one sports review said.
