A former shortstop in Major League Baseball,
Ozzie Smith was born in Mobile, Alabama on December 23, 1954.
He attended in Locke High School and started playing baseball with
Eddie Murray. He was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in 1976 amateur entry draft. Smith was drafted in the 7th round. The following season, he went again to the draft pool and was drafted by the
San Diego Padres in the 4th round. In 1982, he was traded to the
St. Louis Cardinals. His stay in the cardinals gave much of a success. Because of his large part in the game-winning home run, he had able to lead the team to the World Series in 1982 and again reached the World Series in 1985.
He had a batting average of .303, stolen bases of 43, 75 RBIs, scored a 104 runs and 40 double in his greatest season of 1987. This performance that he had had again helped the Cardinals get into the playoffs. His performance had gone well. Smith was even awarded the largest contract in the National League that is worth $2, 340, 000 in the following season of 1987. The Sporting News ranked him the number 87 of the 100 Greatest Baseball Players in 1999. He was also nominated to the Major League Baseball All- Century Team as a finalist.
