Norm Van Lier is a former American professional basketball player in the National Basketball Association. He was born in East Liverpool, Ohio. Throughout his ten season career, Van Lier played as point guard for a few teams in the NBA; the Cincinnati Royals, Chicago Bulls and the Milwaukee Bucks. Before turning pro, Van Lier took his college studies at Saint Francis University in Loretto, Pennsylvania, where he also played college basketball and eventually came out as a standout point guard.
He was listed at 6 ft. 1 in. and 173 lbs. Van Lier began his professional basketball career after he was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in the third round of the 1969 NBA Draft. However, Van Lier was immediately dealt to the Cincinnati Royals, whom he led in assists during the 1970-71 NBA seasons. In the following season, Van Lier was then purchased back by the Bulls where he remained until 1978. Van Lier’s major breakthrough in his career came out with the Bulls when he was selected to play in three NBA All Star Games in 1974, 1976 and 1977. Van Lier was also named three-time NBA All Defensive Team. During that time, Van Lier was one of the most popular Bulls players of the 1970s, one sports review say.
Van Lier was released by the Bulls in October 1978. After that, Van Lier played for one season with the Milwaukee Bucks and retired in 1979. Norm Van Lier died at the age of 61 on February 26, 2009 in Chicago, Illinois.
