Nippy Jones (full name: Vernal Leroy Jones; no nicknames) played first baseman and second baseman from 1946 until 1957 for the St. Louis Cardinals, Philadelphia Phillies and Milwaukee Braves. He played for the Cardinals from 1946 - 1951, Phillies in 1952 and Braves in 1957. Over 8 seasons, he played 412 games, hit 25 home runs, drove in 146 runs, and stole 4 bases. Born on June 29, 1925 in Los Angeles, CA, Jones stood 6' 1" and weighed 185 lb. He attended Fremont (Los Angeles, CA) high school. His debut was on June 9, 1946 and he played his final game on September 29, 1957. Common misspellings of his name include Vernal Leroy Nippy Jones.
