About Mike Walton Memorabilia & Collectibles
Michael Robert “Shakey” Walton is a former professional ice hockey player whom many considered did not live up to his superstar potential. He was born on January 3, 1945 in Kirkland Lake, Ontario. His position was forwards and played with explosive offensive skills, amazing speed, and stellar puckhandling; these skills were enough to compensate his lack of size.
He played junior hockey for the St. Michael’s College School Majors while attending the school on a partial scholarship. He was then transferred to the Neil McNeil Catholic Secondary School when the former’s hockey program was discontinued.
He then joined the Marlboros which was Toronto Maple Leafs' Ontario Hockey Association farm team. He was the second leading scorer in the team and led their campaign in the league championship and won the Memorial Cup in 1964. Then he won the minor league Rookie of the Year award first with the Central Professional Hockey League’s Tulsa Oilers in 1965 and second with the Rochester Americans of the AHL in 1966.
Walton debuted with the Leafs in 1965- 66 and proved himself worthy in a team full of veterans. Though he showed great play, his stay with the team was filled with constant conflict with its head coach and team president. He was then traded to the Philadelphia Flyers then to the Boston Bruins in 1971.He helped the Bruins win the Stanley Cup in 1972 against the New York Rangers.
He then played for the Minnesota Fighting Saints in the World Hockey Association and Team Canada for the 1974 Summit Series against the Soviet Union. Unfortunately, his performance was not good enough. Though he tried to return to the NHL, he was transferred from one team to another. He eventually retired after the 1979- 1980 season and worked in real estate.
