Michael Alfred Gartner, better known as Mike Gartner, is a famous and now retired Canadian ice hockey right winger. In 2001, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, being distinctive for never having won any major awards or being named to the All Star Team. In fact, he never played in any of the Cup Finals.
Gartner, born on October 29, 1959 in Ottawa, Ontario, is a Born-Again Christian, the faith being introduced to him by his former Washington teamate, Jean Pronovost. Gartner is business partners with his former teammate Wes Jarvis, owning three skating rinks in Toronto.
He began his professional career playing in the WHA for Cincinatti Stingers in 1978-1979. In that year, he placed second in the Rookie-of-the-Year honors, with first-place going to Wayne Gretzky. With the closing of WHA, he was forced to play for the Capitals for the next ten seasons to come. His NHL debut was on October 11,1979 where he scored an assist. He wore a number 11 jersey for the Caps.
He won the Capital's Rookie of the Year and MVP awards in 1979-1980. Fans voted him as the team's Most Promising Player in the same year. On March 7, 1989, he was traded to the Minnesota North Stars but lasted only one year with them, quickly transferring to the New York Rangers on March 6, 1990. It was a good year for Gartner, scoring eleven goals and sixteen points last 12 regular season games his team played for that year. He became famous for being the first player to ever score his 500th goal, 500th assist, and 1000th point in one season. He then became the first Ranger to score 40 goals in three consecutive seasons. He was also awarded the All Star Game MVP award.
Gartner served as the President of the NHLPA from 1996 to his year of retirement, 1998. He also served as the Chairman of the Goals and Dreams program along with NHLPA before he retired sometime in March 2007 from the NHPLA itself. He is now involved in coaching youth teams, particularly the Minor Midget AAA, South Central Ontario Coyotes hockey team.
He was well known for his speed and strength in beating defenders down the ice path. He is also the fifth player to have ever reached 700 goals scored record in NHL history.
