Popularly known for the trilogy of boxing fights with late Arturo Gatti, “Irish” Micky Ward was born on the 4th of October 1965. This retired professional junior welterweight boxer is a native of Lowell, Massachusetts where he was considered as a simple blue-collar athlete and working class heron. This man overcame many hardships in his life and continued standing due to his hard work and determination. Dickie Eklund, his older half-brother, was another professional fighter who faced Sugar Ray Leonard once and was featured on High on Crack Street, an HBO documentary in 1995, a part of which was shoot at one of the earlier fights of Micky Ward.
The Fighter, an upcoming film, gives an account of Ward’s ascend to fame. The character of Ward will be portrayed by Mark Wahlberg and for his half-brother Dickie Eklund, Christian Bale. It was also confirmed that Amy Adams will play the part of Ward’s love interest. The filming started in the latter part of July 2009 in Lowell.
Dropkick Murphys’ song The Warrior’s Code, was a dedication for Micky Ward, with his photograph appearing on the album’s cover with the similar title.
