Melvin Jack Hein, a former professional football player, was born on August 22, 1909. Popularly known as Mel Hein, he was a National Football League player who played for the New York Giants. He played high school football at Burlington High School where he was a defensive and center player. In his senior year as the school’s football athlete, he was given the Skagit County Football MVP award and was included in the All-State first team. He moved on to Washington State University where he excelled as a football center. According to reviews, he was one of the top-rated center in football.
As a professional player, he spent 15 years playing for the New York Giants as a defensive lineman and a center. From 1933 to 1940, he was included to the All-NFL Center and was part of the All-Pro team eight times. In 1938, he was named as the National Football League Most Valuable Player and played for the Giants in two NFL Championships.
Because of his tremendous performances during his playing career, he was inducted to the Pro Football Hal of Fame in 1963 and was included in the list of 100 Greatest Football Players by The Sporting News. He was also part of the NFL 50th Anniversary Team. Hein was also a charter member of the National Football League Hall of Fame in Ohio.
