Hubert Max Lanier was an American left-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball played for the St. Louis Cardinals. Lanier is a naturally right-handed player, who then had become a left-handed pitcher only because he twice broke his right arm during childhood. In his 14-season of MLB career, Lanier posted a 108-82 record with 821 strikeouts and a 3.01 ERA in 1619-1/3 innings pitched, including 21 shutouts and 91 complete games. Lanier died at age 91 in Dunnellon, Florida.

Born on August 18, 1915 in Denton, NC, Lanier stood 5' 11" and weighed 180 lb. He attended high school. His debut was on April 20, 1938 and he played his final game on July 4, 1953.
