Matt Pavelick was a hockey linesman. Pavelick officiated in the National Hockey League for the Detroit Red Wings from the 1955 season all the way to the 1986 season. Pavelick was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. He is the younger brother of Marty Pavelick who played in the NHL the same time that he officiated.
In 1948, Pavelick was starting to officiate in games in the different minor league games in Sault. He was 20 when he served as referee-in-charge for a league that is an affiliate of a northern Michigan league. In 1955, Pavelick was able to officiate in the American Hockey League. A season after, Pavelick was off to the NHL.
Starting the 1956 season, Pavelick became a linesman for the Detroit Red Wings – the team where his brother had been playing. This official-player tandem was matched by Art Skov whose brother played for the Chicago Black Hawks.
Pavelick was able to officiate in the NHL during the 1976 season when the league accommodated Soviet teams. By the time of Pavelick’s 1979 retirement, he officiated a total of 1,727 regular games and 245 playoff games. He was the supervisor of officials in the NHL and was included in the Hockey Hall of Fame as a referee/linesman in 1987.
