 Matthew Joseph Herping, a former professional basketball player, was born on May 31, 1976 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He finished high school at Marist School and went to Georgia Tech where he played as a starter for four years. He was included in the All-ACC First Team thrice and set high records in ACC with 21.6 points per game and 9.4 rebounds average. He was included in the 50th Anniversary Team of the ACC being one of the fifty top players in the history of ACC.

He played his rookie season in the National Basketball Association after being drafted by the Orlando Magic during the 1998 NBA Draft. He made 8.2 points and 4.3 rebounds per game in his primary rookie season and was included to the First Team of the 1998-1999 NBA All-Rookie. He had an injury during his second year with the Magic and was then traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers. He spent one season with the Cavaliers where he made a career-high record of 28 points.

He joined the Philadelphia 76ers in 2001 and appeared in 81 games for the team. In 2002, he signed as deal with the Utah Jazz and belonged to the offensive assets of the team. He averaged 17.6 points per game while with the Jazz and reviews say he had his best NBA season that year. He was later on traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder who released him in 2010. He became a studio analyst of the NBA TV after retiring from being a professional player.
