Mats Wilander was born on August 22, 1964 in Vaxjo Sweden. He is a former World No. 1 tennis player. From 1982 through 1988, he won seven Grand Slam singles titles: three in the French Open, three at the Australian Open, and one at the US Open, and one Grand Slam men's doubles title at Wimbledon.
He won 33 singles titles and seven doubles titles in his entire career. Wilander was the driving force for Sweden in the Davis Cup in the Finals in the year 1980. He also won the French Junior Title, the Europeam under-16 and under-18 championships and the Orange Bowl in Miami.
Wilander made his debut on the professional tour at the clay court tournament in 1982. He shook the tennis world at the 1982 French Open. As an unseeded player, he upset second seed Ivan Lendl in the fourth round, fifth seed Vitas Gerulaitis in the quarterfinals, fourth seed José Luis Clerc in the semifinals, and third seed Guillermo Vilas in the finals.
He suffered a major lost in 1996, in the second round of the Australian Open to Ramesh Krishnan, the quarterfinals of the French Open to Andrei Chesnokov, the quarterfinals of Wimbledon to John McEnroe, and the second round of the US Open to Pete Sampras.
