Mary Joe Fernandez is a retired professional tennis player. She was able to reach three Grand Slam finals. Fernandez is of Hispanic descent as her father is from Spain while her mother hails from Cuba. She was born on August 19, 1971 in the Dominican Republic.
Fernandez first showed her flair for playing tennis after winning four Orange Bowl titles. She was able to impress the tennis world when she beat Sara Gomer during a main draw match at the age of 14.
The next year, she started playing professionally. She was able to win her first singles title during the 1990 Tokyo Indoor Championships. In that same year, she was able to reach the finals of the Australian Open but was defeated by Steffi Graf. She finished that year by ranking fourth in the world.
In 1991, she was back in the finals of the Australian Open but this time against Patty Fendick to whom she lost to. In 1993, she met Graf again but this time in the finals of the French Open. She lost to Graf in a hard fought match.
