Mark Rypien is a former American professional football player in the National Football League. He was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and was the first ever Canadian-born quarterback to start in the National Football League. Rypien took his college education at Washington State University where he had a notable college football career, according to sources. Rypien played as quarterback for numerous teams in the league; the Washington Redskins, Cleveland Browns, St. Louis Rams, Philadelphia Eagles, Atlanta Falcons, Indianapolis Colts and Seattle Seahawks. After leaving the national league, Rypien made a promotional gig in the Indoor Football League playing for the Rochester Raider for one game.
He was listed at 6 ft. 4 in. and 231 lbs. Rypien turned pro after being drafted in the National Football League by the Washington Redskins in the 1986 NFL Draft where he was the sixth round pick of the team. After the draft, however, Rypien spent two years in the Redskins Injured Reserve List. As a result, Rypien was not cleared to play when the Redskins reached the Super Bowl XXII. Rypien gained a lot of achievement in his playing career; he was a two-time selection in the Pro Bowl in 1989 an 1991; he also received the MVP award in the Super Bowl XXVI; and being two-time Super Bowl Champion with the Redskins. Rypiens’ last professional game was on June 10, 2006.
