About Mariano Rivera Art
Though he is now considered one of baseball’s best relievers,
Mariano Rivera of the
New York Yankees didn’t start off loving the game he now plays so well. As a child in Panama, Rivera first fell in love with another game, the game of soccer. After going through some ankle injuries though, his aspirations for the sport died down, but didn’t automatically shift to baseball either. Rivera first tried his hand at fishing before finally giving in to baseball after capsizing a boat.
Mariano Rivera first signed on in 1990 as a rookie for the minor leagues of the Yankees. He spoke no English and was not considered one of the best, but quickly proved himself during the 1990 season. His performance was so strong that by 1992 he went on to play for the Fort Lauderdale Yankees at a Class A-Advanced level and despite suffering an injury, moved on to play with the Albany-Colonie Yankees at Double-A level.
It wasn’t long before Rivera reached the major leagues, debuting in May of 1995 with the starting pitch. His performance was unsteady though, and at one point he was considered for a trade, until he began pitching at around 95 mph. Rivera went uphill from there, earning the honor as American League All-Star 12 times and winning the Delivery Man of the Year Award for three years.
But not only is Rivera known and respected by his peers for his athletic ability and numerous achievements, he is also known for his cool temperament. In the midst of the many frustrations and misunderstandings that stem from the game, you can always count on Mariano Rivera to keep a level head and keep his eye on the ball.
