Fish's father Tom is a tennis teaching professional. At an early age of two years old, he was popular when the Minnesota TV station focused on young Fish hitting tennis balls from the baseline over the net. In 1986, their family went to Vero Beach, Florida where he attended Saddlebrook Academy but finished his junior and senior years at Boca Raton. He also made friends with co-tennis player Andy Roddick and Jesse Levine.
During the Association of Tennis Professionals tour, Fish won three tournaments until he reached the Masters Series events: Cincinnati and Indian Wells in 2003 and 2008 respectively. He achieved in being part of the quarter-finals during the Grand Slam tournament against Andy Roddick. He also proved to be a great player when he also reached the quarter-finals versus World No. 1 Rafael Nadal at the 2008 US Open.
In 2000, Fish was already considered as a professional player at the young age of 18. Most of the time he played the minor leagues in the Challenger and Futures circuits. In 2002, he played with former classmate Andy Roddick at the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships in Houston, Texas.
