Len Wilkens is a former American professional basketball player and coach who hail from Brooklyn, New York and took his college education at Providence College. He started playing in pro basketball after he was drafted by the St. Louis Hawks of the National Basketball Association during the round one of the 1960 NBA Draft. Wilkens also played as point guard for a few other teams in the NBA, namely the Seattle SuperSonics, Cleveland Cavaliers and the Portland Trail Blazers.
Wilkens had an astonishing pro career in the NBA, being a nine time selection in NBA All-Star Games and becoming an All-Star Game MVP in 1972 and being part of NBA's 50 Greatest Players. During his last remaining seasons in the NBA, Wilkens led the league in assists during the 1969–70 season, and at the time of his retirement, Wilkens was the league’s second all time leading playmaker, behind Oscar Robertson.
After his playing career, Wilkens also served in the coaching staff of several NBA teams, the Seattle SuperSonics, Portland Trail Blazer, Cleveland Cavaliers, Atlanta Hawks, Toronto Raptors and the New York Knicks. During his coaching career, Wilkens was able to make some success leading the SuperSonics to the 1979 NBA Championship, being named Coach of the Year in 1994 and NBA's Top 10 Coaches. Wilkens was also inducted in to the Basketball Hall of Fame both as a player and coach.
