Lanny Wadkins is a retired American professional golf player. He was born in Richmond, Virginia. Wadkins was ranked by the Official World Golf Rankings in the top-10 for eighty six weeks from his debut in 1986 up to 1988. He took his college education when he attended Wake Forest University in Wake Forest, North Carolina. In 1970, Wadkins won the U.S. Amateur Championship and turned professional in 1971. During the 1972 Sahara Invitational held in Las Vegas, Wadkins won his first PGA Tour and later he was voted 1972 PGA Rookie of the Year. In 1973, two more wins followed before his form dipped for three years.
He recovered to record his lone major championship victory in the 1977 PGA Championship held at Pebble Beach Golf Links courtesy of a three hole sudden-death playoff against Gene Littler. Wadkins was also able to finish third in The Masters Tournament on three occasions; in 1990, 1991 and 1993. During the Open Championship at St. Andrews in 1984, Wadkins’ best finish was fourth. On the PGA Tour, he won The Players Championship in 1979 at Sawgrass and in 1985, he was voted as PGA Player of the Year. In 1992, at the Canon Greater Hartford Open, Wadkins achieved his twenty-first and final PGA Tour victory. He has also won in Australia, Canada, Japan and South America in his career. Wadkins also played in the Ryder Cup eight times between 1977 and 1993.
