 Knute Rockne is regarded by many as the greatest college football coach in history. Until the present day, no coach has ever had the same success as Rockne. It was not only his experience of the game that assisted in his success, but also his knowledge of human anatomy which gave him more understanding on how to design his own football equipment . His history in academics is also very impressive and inspiring.

Rockne was born on March 4, 1888 in Voss, Norway. He is the son of a carriage maker, who brought the family to Chicago, IL. It was there at the age of 5 years old, when Rockne was introduced to football. He studied at Notre Dame, after passing the entrance exam at the age of 22. He served as captain of the football team in 1913, and graduated magna cum laude from the school with a 90.52 GPA. It was during this time that he assisted the college’s football team, and was named Head Coach in 1917, when his successor retired.

As head coach from 1918 to 1930, Rockne set the all-time winning percentage of .881. This percentage is ranked the highest for both college and professional level football. He led Notre Dame to five undefeated seasons without a tie, and is noted for coaching the “Four Horsemen”, a small, talented group of the backfield of the team. His most notable players he coached were George ‘Gipper’ Gipp, Don Miller, Harry Stuhldreher, Jim Crowley, and Elmer Layden. Notre Dame won a National Championship in 1930 before his untimely in airplane crash in 1931.
