Kenny Houston is a retired National Football League player who appeared as a defensive back during the 1967 to 1980 seasons. Houston was able to play in the AFL and in the NFL during his time. He was with the Houston Oilers when the team was still playing in the AFL and followed the team when the two leagues merged together and the Oilers played in the NFL. In 1980, Houston played for the Washington Redskins.
Born and raised in Lufkin, Texas, Houston attended Dunbar High School where he excelled in playing not just football but also basketball. He was recruited and decided to play for the Prairie State College, which is now known as the Prairie View A&M University. After making it a starting linebacker for the team, he was able to earn All-American honors in the SEC.
Houston made the leap to professional football after he was drafted during the ninth round of the 1967 NFL draft. Throughout at the course of his career, Houston was named into a total of 12 Pro Bowls – consecutively from the 1968 season to the 1979 season. Houston was also named into the 75th Anniversary All-Time Team and the 1970’s All-Decade Team in the NFL.
