Born on July 13, 1979 in Oarai, Ibaraki, Japan, Kei Igawa is a Major League Baseball player who serves as a starting pitcher. Before making his way to the Major League Baseball, he played for several Japanese teams which include the Hanshin Tigers which drafted him in 1998. He spent a few years in the minor league systems and appeared in the Central League. The Hanshin Tigers were able to reach the 2003 Central League pennant with the help of Igawa’s awesome performance. He made a 20-5 record for that season and was named as the Most Valuable Player of the Central League. He also received the Eiji Sawamura Award which is equal to the Cy Young Award of the American League.
He proclaimed his desire to appear for the North American teams in 2006 and was placed on post by his Japanese team. On December 27, 2006, he was signed by the New York Yankees who offered the highest bid. His Major League Baseball debut came on April 7, 2007 and made 7 earned runs. He earned a win against the Boston Red Sox when he played as a relief. He also spent some seasons in the minor league systems and attended a number of spring training camps. He appeared in the Major League Baseball Japan All-Star Series.
