Closer player for the Boston Red Sox, Jonathan Papelbon bats and throws right-handed. He was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on November 23, 1980.
Papelbon was first drafted by the Boston Red Sox in 2002. He studied at Bishop Kenny High School where he became a three-time All-City honoree. He then pursued his studies at Mississippi State University. It is where he accomplished a 9-6 record, 13 powerful saves, and 2.90 ERA. Papelbon had his major league debut with the Red Sox on July 31, 2005 in a game against Minnesota. It was on September 12, 2005 when he had his first major league victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. Papelbon’s two postseason appearances enabled him to pitch four scoreless innings in a game against the White Sox.
It was on April 5 when he was to record his first career save in Texas. In 2006, Papelbon was able to play in35 games, struck out 75 batters all in 68 innings and was able to hold opposing batters to a .167 batting average. He is known to throw a fastball clocked as high as 99 mph. Papelbon also has a good slider, curveball and changeup. He was second in the American League Rookie of the Year voting conducted in 2006.
