John Vukovich is a former American professional baseball player and coach in the Major League Baseball. He was born in Sacramento, California. Vukovich studied high school at Amador High School in Sutter Creek, California. Vukovich played as infielder for several teams during his career in the Major League Baseball; the Philadelphia Phillies, Milwaukee Brewers and the Cincinnati Reds. Vukovich also served as manager of two teams in the majors; the Chicago Cubs and the Philadelphia Phillies.
He was listed at 6 ft. 1 in. and 187 lbs. He both batted and threw using his right. Vukovich began his professional career in the Major League baseball after he was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies during the 1966 amateur draft where he was the first round pick of the team. He formally signed on May 20, 1966. He made his debut on September 11, 1970. Vukovich was largely used as a utility infielder being capable of playing all four positions; the first base, second base, third base and shortstop.
Vukovich was a backup for the Reds during the 1975 World Series-winning team, though he was traded back to the Phillies even before the playoffs began. Back in the Phillies, Vukovich also became part of the 1980 Phillies World Series-winning team. His final game was on August 23, 1981. John Vukovich passed away at the age of 59 on March 8, 2007 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
