John Alfred Roper is a retired American football player born on October 4, 1965 in Houston, Texas. He went to Jack Yates High School in Houston and attended college at Texas A&M University where he also played football. He played as a linebacker in the National Football League and wore jersey number 55 for the Chicago Bears, 53 for the Dallas Cowboys, and 56 for the Philadelphia Eagles
Roper was drafted as 36th overall in the 2nd round of the 1989 National Football League Entry Draft by the Chicago Bears. He played for three seasons with the Bears and in 1993 played for the Dallas Cowboys. One noted incident about him is the time he fell asleep during a meeting with the Cowboys. After that incident, he was straight away put on waivers. Later that same year, Roper played for the Philadelphia Eagles. In his five- year career, he started 39 out of 68 games played, with 2 interceptions, 1 kickoff return, 18 sacks, and 1 fumble.
