Pacella graduated from Connetquot High School where he showcased his developing baseball skills and was finally drafted to play professionally in 1974.

He was picked by the New York Mets in the fourth round of the 1974 Major League Baseball Draft and played his rookie season with the team. He had his Major League Baseball debut on September 15, 1977 for the Mets. Pacella batted and threw with his right hand and served as a pitcher for the Major League Baseball teams he played for. According to many reviews, he had a strange way of pitching, as his cap sometimes fall off after he executed a pitch.

He spent the 1977, 1979 to 1980 seasons with the New York Mets and then joined the New York Yankees in 1982. For the latter part of the 1982 season, he played for the Minnesota Twins and was also part of the Baltimore Orioles in 1984. In his final season in the Major League Baseball in 1986, he played for the Detroit Tigers. His final game in the major league came on July 12, 1986 for the Tigers. In his entire career, he logged a record of 4-10 and an earned run average of 5.73. He recorded 116 strikeouts in his whole stay in the league.
