John Edwin Hummel was a professional baseball player who was born on April 4, 1883 in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. He attended Bloomsberg University of Pennsylvania where he played collegiate baseball and was known as a good outfielder. He served as a second baseman, an outfielder and a first baseman for two Major League Baseball teams. From 1905 to 1915, he played for Brooklyn Superbas which was also known as Brooklyn Dodgers and Brooklyn Robins. In 1918, he joined the New York Yankees. Hummel batted and threw with his right hand and made his very first Major League Baseball appearance on September 12, 1905 for the Brooklyn Superbas. He spent twelve seasons in the major league and recorded 3, 906 at bats, 421 runs, 991 hits and 84 triples. He appeared 1, 161 games in his entire career and recorded .254 batting average and scored 29 home runs. According to statistics, he had 117 stolen bases and recorded 346 walks with a .316 on-base percentage. Hummel had 1, 374 total bases and made 114 sacrifice hits. He appeared for the last time on the Major League Baseball on September 2, 1918 for the New York Yankees. In 1910, he had the most number of strikeouts in the National League with 81.
